Does your mattress still feel comfortable – providing soft, cushioned support for a restful night’s sleep? You may be surprised to learn that the quality of your bed has started to degrade, as padded foam layers begins to compress and spring coils wear out. The process is gradual -- occurring in small increments over the years that don’t seem noticeable at first. Perhaps you’re switching up sleeping positions more than normal, or wake up feeling a little less refreshed than usual. Unless there’s a visible sag in the center of your bed, or coils are poking through the surface, general wear and tear isn’t always so obvious. Even the most expensive, top-of-the-line mattresses need replacing at some point. Most beds are designed to last anywhere from 8-10 years.
If you’re in doubt about the condition of your bed, here are five signs it’s time to part ways and begin the search for new sleep set up. After all, you spend a third of your life sleeping, so this piece of furniture has a tremendous impact on your health and well-being.
Rejuvenating slumber is hard to come by
A quality, supportive bed is one that promotes deep, restorative sleep. When you find yourself tired all the time, or waking up feeling unrefreshed, an old or worn out mattress may be the culprit. A mattress past its prime no longer offers the motion isolation and comfort needed to drift off peacefully and stay soundly asleep.
Your mattress remembers you a little too well
As you crawl into bed and pull down the comforter, you can clearly see your body imprint as if you were still lying on top. This is a sure-fire sign that the memory foam (or top cushion layer) is no longer bouncing back to its original shape and therefore needs to be replaced.
Waking up with new aches and pains
An old mattress can no longer distribute body weight evenly. When this happens, our spines are not properly aligned, leading to back and neck pain. If you wake up with unexplained low back pain or a stiff neck, your mattress is likely to blame!
Your sleep partner rolls toward you
Cuddling with a loved one is great, but so is getting a decent night’s sleep! If you are constantly meeting your partner in the center of the bed, it’s time to do some
mattress shopping. A sagging bed isn’t just annoying, it can seriously hamper your quality of sleep.
Your allergies are acting up
Bacterial build up, dust mites and mold are common problems in mattresses that are well past their due date. This can trigger hay fever, asthma attacks and other allergies. If your sniffles seem to abate on the sofa or when sleeping at a hotel, it’s definitely time to invest in a new bed.
