So how do you shop wisely and pick the best mattress for your particular sleep style and health concerns?  Consumer Reports – a nonprofit organization that performs unbiased tests on thousands of products to help shoppers make better and more informed decisions – has a few practical tips.

How to find the right mattress

Choosing the right mattress at the right price point is no easy feat, considering the myriad options available. In an effort to help shoppers narrow down their list, Consumer Reports takes dozens of mattresses to their labs, where they are repeatedly evaluated for lumbar and spine support, motion transfer, durability over the years, and other key factors. They then publish ratings that show which mattresses provide exceptional value according to their research.

Their extensive testing has demonstrated that, whether you choose a memory foam bed, a latex mattress, an innerspring model, or a hybrid mattress, you don’t have to spend big bucks to enjoy quality sleep.

If you’re in the market for a new sleep set up, here are some shopping tips offered by Consumer Reports:

1. Forget about comparison shopping with mattresses. If you like a Sealy innerspring mattress in one store, you might not find the exact same model in another outlet. That’s because most mattress manufacturers sell exclusive lines to different stores.
2. Take your time when shopping. Ignore pushy salespeople when shopping for your new bed. Try and spend at least 5-10 minutes lying down in your normal sleep position to really get a feel for the comfort and support.
3. Verify return policies– Make sure you know the details and fine print of the return policy, as some mattress outlets will charge “re-stocking fees” in the event of a return. Return periods generally range from 30 days to 4 months, so be sure to ask before you buy.
4. Shopping on a budget? Start browsing in the back of the store, where most low-end and mid-range beds will be displayed. Managers normally place their most expensive inventory toward the front of the store.

It’s also important to understand the warranty offered. Some companies offer unconditional 10-year warranties, while others may cover manufacturing defects up to 20 or 25 years.
