It’s not uncommon for people to feel like the mattress that arrives feels different from the one that they tried in the store. This is simply because the one at the store has seen a little bit of action and is probably past its break-in period because of the people lying on it to test it out. If you’re wondering how to break in a mattress faster than the usual 30 days, you’re in the right place.
Did you know that, on average, we spend a total of 26 years – or 227,760 hours – of our lives sleeping on a mattress? The earliest mattresses discovered by scientists date back to 77,000 years ago and were largely made from grasses and other raw plant material. Over many thousands of years, beds evolved to become more luxurious, made with sumptuous materials and paired with elevated or elaborately decorative bases.
When the first innerspring mattress was invented in 1971, there weren’t many options to choose from. But today, there are literally thousands of mattresses available on the market. Just like choosing anything you intend to use for the next 10 years, do your research! If mattress research isn’t your thing, though, that’s okay; just talk to someone who you can trust has done theirs, like the Sleep Specialists at Mattress World Northwest’s Heritage Plaza location.
These are some signs that you may be needing a new mattress:
When choosing a new mattress, there are some things you’ll want to consider first. These things range from material used, size of bed, number of occupants, bedroom size and allergies you may have.
There is no perfect mattress; there is only the perfect mattress for you! Our body type has a big impact on what we find comfortable. A smaller-framed person who likes to side sleep will most likely find that a softer mattress keeps them comforted, supported and cradled throughout the night. Larger people will find that a mattress with a higher profile and a firmer feel helps keep their spine aligned and continues to serve them well for the duration of its lifetime. People with special considerations such as mobility issues may benefit from having an adjustable base that makes getting in and out of bed easier. Latex mattresses can’t be beat for those with allergies.
If you want to know how to break in a mattress, the best way to do it is simply by sleeping on it. Consistency is key here, and you’ll need to sleep on it for at least a handful of days or possibly weeks for the materials to really find their gear and live up to their full potential. If you’re keen to put this process into hyperdrive, here are some things that you can do to break in a mattress faster:
A warmer room will cause the materials to break in faster than a cold room. Raising the temperature of the room even a few degrees will make materials like memory foam and latex soften in response to the increased heat.
Sleeping on the bed consistently every night is the best way to shorten the time it takes for the mattress to break in.
Rolling around, bouncing or even lightly jumping on a latex or memory foam mattress can help speed up the break-in process. Please do not jump on innerspring or hybrid mattresses, as this could damage the coils.
The degree of variance in both the time it takes and how to break in a mattress depends largely on the materials used in the mattress that you choose and how you use the mattress initially.
Latex mattresses typically take anywhere from 2 to 14 days to break in. The more you move around and the heavier you are, the quicker the mattress will soften up and become what you felt in the showroom.
Memory foam takes about 60 days. The length of time it takes to break in a memory foam mattress depends on the density of the foam used in its construction. Lower-quality, less dense memory foams will break in more quickly, but they will also wear out more quickly – a consideration for the investment you are making at purchase. Higher-quality, denser memory foam mattresses may take a full 60 days to reach optimum comfort, but they will last many more years than their spongier counterparts.
These take about 30 days. The springs in a mattress can soften up more quickly than other materials, and it is important to rotate the mattress at least a few times to ensure that they break in evenly.
Break-in time can take 30 to 90 days. This varies for hybrid mattresses depending on the types of materials used in the memory foam portion of the mattress. Memory foams that are infused with gel, graphite or copper may take shorter or longer to break in than traditional memory foam.
While sleeping on a new mattress straight away certainly won’t kill you or make you ill, it is recommended to let it air out in a well-ventilated room for at least a few hours to allow for natural off-gassing.
Open some windows, turn on a fan and crank up the heat if you want to give the process a boost. Most mattresses are packaged with a certain degree of squish caused by the plastic encasing. Sleeping on a new mattress immediately after removing the plastic may not give the mattress time to fluff itself up and return to its peak form. It could also irritate your allergies or even cause you to have a slight headache from the emission of harmless chemical odors leftover from manufacturing that have been longing to make their escape. Memory foam mattresses typically undergo the longest period of off-gassing – up to 24 hours. Innerspring mattresses typically settle and release any odors present within a few hours. For a hybrid mattress, this period may lie somewhere in the middle.
