How to Find the Most Comfortable Mattress

Mattress comfort is very subjective. Some sleepers take comfort enveloped in layers of plush pillowtop, while others prefer to sleep on top of a flatter surface. Most importantly, you want to find an Oregon mattress store that showcases all the different mattress comfort types, so you can make the best personal decision.

Mattress Comfort Types Offered at Mattress World Northwest

There are three general mattress comfort types, although each one runs the gamut from harder to softer, depending on the manufacturer, mattress line, and materials used.

  • Firm Mattress: Stomach and back sleepers often choose a firmer mattress that offers the utmost durability and support. Overweight sleepers may also prefer a firm mattress, where it is easy to lay down and get up again. Side sleepers and arthritis sufferers may not find firm mattresses with enough cushion for their liking.
  • Plush Mattress: Back and side sleepers often fall in love with the contouring layers of a plush mattress that may include organic latex, high-density memory foam, or individually-wrapped inner spring coils. Some sleepers say a plush mattress “hugs” you or provides a “cloud-like” slumber.
  • Pillowtop Mattress: Pillowtop mattresses combine the best of both worlds, with a firm inner core surrounded by softer layers of cushioning. Most top-rated consumer beds and hotel mattresses fall under this popular category. Pillowtops are suitable for side sleepers, back sleepers, and back pain sufferers alike.

Choosing Mattress Comfort Levels

Every manufacturer offers a mattress comfort scale rating from 1-10 to help you narrow down your search.

  • 1-2: Very Firm – Choose this mattress comfort type if: you consider a carpeted floor to be perfectly comfortable; you are a back or stomach sleeper; or if you know you want the firmest mattress possible.
  • 3-4: Firm – Choose this mattress comfort type if: you like a bit of dense padding; you are a back or stomach sleeper; or you like feeling as though you are “on top” of the mattress, rather than “in” it.
  • 5-6: Medium – Choose this mattress comfort type if: you like a balance of softness and firmness; you are a back sleeper, stomach, or side sleeper; you are looking for a happy medium of comfort and durability.
  • 7-8: Soft – Choose this mattress comfort type if: you want pressure relief, especially for your hips and shoulders when side-sleeping; you are a back sleeper with a lot of aches and pains; you like contour foam.
  • 9-10: Very Soft – Choose this mattress comfort type if: you want to feel like you’re sleeping on a cloud; you need maximum pressure relief for side and back sleeping; you like to “sink in” to your bed.

How to Pick the Right Comfort Type

It’s not easy figuring out how to find the most comfortable mattress on your own. That’s why we invite you in to meet with one of our trained Sleep Specialists who will be committed to helping you determine your preferences. The best way to know for sure is to lay on a few different showroom mattresses. You’ll know at once the ones that are “too hard” or “too soft” for your liking.

Once you find the right mattress comfort type, try a few different manufacturers to experience the difference. Try going up or down a number to see if the subtle change is preferable. Keep in mind that you can always buy a pillowtop or foam pad to go overtop a firmer mattress, but you cannot retrofit a mattress that is too soft. Experts recommend spending a good 10-15 minutes on a bed before deciding to buy.
